Gibson, A-1, Mandolin, 1937
$1,350.00
This mandolin is listed in the Spann catalogue as an A-00, but it has the back binding and white-button tuners of a period A-1. It does have the cloud tailpiece of an A-00. At the time, the A-00, A-1 and A-50 were very little different from one another. This mandolin had only two owners – the original mandolist and then his daughter – before coming to Vintage. It needed some refreshing, but has remained in overall very fine condtion. The frets are original, and recently dressed. The original pickguard had disintegrated, but the mandolin still has its original chipboard case, which is in nice condition. The bridge has been replaced with a modern Siminoff reproduction. There’s plenty of height in the neck angle, allowing for a tall bridge and helping to give this a great big sound. The back and sides are maple, and the top is spruce with ff-holes. There are no cracks in the top or back, but an area of scratches in the back. The rosewood fingerboard has pearl fret markers at frets 3,5,7,10,12 & 15. Original chipboard case.
