William Lange for William Stahl, Banjo, Five-string, c.1910, Milwaukee
This banjo?s laminated stained wood rim is 10-1/2″ in diameter and 5/8″ thick with a maple heel cap and 24 brackets. It still has an original Jos. B. Rogers skin head. The two-piece neck looks like very darkly stained mahogany with floral heel carving. The dowel is branded Wm C. Stahl/ Maker/ Milwaukee, Wis. The ebony fingerboard has 22 frets and a scale length of 26″ with attractive abalone inlays.
William C. Stahl was a publishing firm in Milwaukee and sold instruments from a variety of manufacturers including Larson Brothers of Chicago. The cover of the William Stahl 1912 Catalog advertises Hand Made Mandolins Guitars and Banjos The William Stahl brand was around from 1903-1925.
