Another masterpiece from artist, university professor, and instrument builder Doug Unger. This banjo has a 10″ 1890s Fairbanks rim with Electric tone-ring, in black with a beveled edge, marquetry trim, and 28 brackets. The skin head is original to the rim and is decorated with wonderful period doodles. Note especially the dedication “A banjo is like a chicken – you gotta pluck it.” The two-piece figured cherry neck is in the Fairbanks/Cole style with a carved “boat-heel”. The fingerboard is of faux tortoise with engraved modified No.2 Whyte Laydie style inlays and 22 frets. The faux tortoise peghead overlay has an exquisite engraved No.3 style abalone flowerpot inlay. The geared tuners and geared 5th peg tuners have an antiqued finish, and the strings attach with a No Knot tailpiece. The neck has a 2-way adjustable rod (accessed underneath the heel). Scale length is 26″. In all, one of the most appealing and artistically executed banjos we have seen (and it sounds great!).
