C. Edgar Dobson by JH Buckbee, Great Echo, Banjo
The Great Echo has a nickel plated rim (no wood) with a built in echo chamber. The wooden dowel of the neck passes through the cover built into the rim, which is stamped: C. EDGAR DOBSON’S/ GREAT ECHO BANJO/ PAT’D NOV. 6, 1888. The head is skin. A few of the 24 bracket nuts are replaced – the original bracket nuts are especially beautiful and we had none of the sort to replace the replacements with. The fingerboard has been replaced with a solid ebony board and the walnut neck is refinished. In addition to the echo chamber- which makes the 9-7/8″ rim sound much bigger than it is, the banjo has an ingenious neck angle adjustment mechanism at the bottom end of the dowel stick. The neck has 17 frets and the scale is 24″. With a later soft case.
